Join The Creative Side | In this blog post, I am going to show you how you can use Printful to sell your digital art on physical products like mugs, pillows, t-shirts, and even more products. You can actually see this as a passive income stream. In this blog post, I am going to show you how you can use Printful to sell your digital art on mugs, pillows, t-shirts, and even more products. As you know, I highly support it to monetize your art as a digital artist. I also wrote a blog post about 5 ways you can make money as an artist that isn’t selling your original work.

You probably have dreamed about selling your work on mugs, tote bags, shirts, etc. But you might be facing some struggles:

  • How do I produce those products?

  • How do I package those products?

  • How do I ship those products?

  • How can I make enough profit from it without only earning a 10% cut?

I know the struggles. I have been there. Before I discovered the tool I am using now, I was in the exact same situation. I didn’t know how to create those products on my own, and joining sites like Society6 and Redbubble was hell for me. When I got a sale, I only made $2. I couldn’t cover any bills from $2!

But what if only one company could take away all the stress and struggle of this? I am not kidding! I want to introduce you to my secret weapon: Printful. This company is AMAZING! They do all the hard work for you, and you can sit back and focus on creating beautiful digital art.

What is Printful exactly?

Printful is a Print on demand/dropship company that produce, packages and ships your products for you. You upload your work, and Printful does the rest. Now, there are a lot of drop ship companies like Society6 and Redbubble, but Printful has my preference. Later in this article I will explain to you why.

Why should you use Printful?

There are tons of features that I love about Printful. Printful is easy to set up, to use, and it feels like they are a part of your team because they do all the hard- and time-consuming work for you. Here are the core reasons why I use Printful:

An insane amount of integration options

What I love about Printful is that you don’t have to create your own storefront. Let’s say you sell on Etsy, and you want to sell your digital paintings on mugs. You don’t have to create a whole new storefront with Printful. You can sync your Printful account to Etsy. Every time you create a new product on your Printful account, it will be synced to your Etsy shop automatically. Isn’t that wonderful?! Imagine how much time you will save.

Etsy is just an example. Printful also integrates with Shopify, Gumroad, Squarespace, and they keep adding more stores. Take a look at the screenshot below to see if Printful integrates with your favorite platform. They will also walk you through how to set up each platform with a video demo.

Pssst! Did you knew that I teach an entire in depth course on Skillshare about how I use Printful to create physical passive products?? This course contains exclusive content that is not available in this blog post. You can watch the entire course for free by clicking this link.

Printful is White Label

When someone orders a mug from you Printed by Printful, you might think: There will appear a Printful logo on that mug. Nope ;) Printful is completely white label. Meaning, there won’t lappear a logo from Printful on the products you create. This means you can go crazy with your creativity, and even add your own logo and branding if you want!

Have full control over your pricing

Let’s say it costs Printful $20 to make a T-shirt, and you sell it for $40. This means you will earn $20 profit. As long as you pay that $20 fee to Printful after you have made a sale, you can decide your own profit. If you want to make $30 from every shirt, just put your retail price on $50.

How it works when you get a sale

They have created a fantastic video to show you what happens when you make a sale. Watch it below.

Why not Society6

I have a blog post where I write why you should NOT friggin use Society6. Let me copy+paste it for you:

''First of all, the market is SATURATED as what! Every artist sells their art on Society6. And they only have the same products. Everyone can print their design on shirts, pillows, etc.

You also don’t have any interaction with your customers. You can’t convert your customers in returning customers, because Society6 owns them all. They own everything. The products, the customers, and even the products you make.

To make it even worse, if you purchase something from Society6, a logo from them is bombarded with your product.

Why should you care?

Okay, someone named Lexa bought a pillow from Selena her shop on Society6. Lexa receives the pillow from Society6. A couple of days later, she has a friend coming over. That friend asks where she got that pillow from.

Guess what Lexa answers:

‘’I got if from Society6.’’

Is this going to help Selena getting customers on repeat? No.

And the worst: Society6 only gives you a 10% cut.''

And that my friend is why I don't use Society6

Let's get started: Connect your favorite platforms.

Creating a Printful account is a piece of cake. Take an example video below to see how to connect your shop to Printful. In this case, we are going to take a look at how to connect your Printful to Etsy. You can open your account here.

Create your first product

The excitement: Creating your first product and watching it come to life with the mock-up generator. I get wow-ed away every time I produce a product with Printful.

I created an entire in depth course on Skillshare for you to show you how you can create your first product, add the pricing, and sync it to your Etsy shop, and more exclusive content. You can watch the entire course for free by clicking this link. By clicking the link, you will get 2 free months of Skillshare, so you can binge-watch unlimited classes. You can cancel anytime.

While I love the new clipart feature from Printful, I recommend you to only use your own work. You are more likely to stand out, and it is less likely that a lot of people use the same clipart as yours.

Upload a packing slip

Remember when we talked about branding your products with Printful? That is what we will discuss now. Not only is Printful white label, but you can also add your own logo and custom message to the packing slip.

The packing slip is the giant sticker on the package with the name, address, etc. of the customer. You can add your own logo and custom message so your customer can see that the box comes from you.

To add your own packing slip and custom message, go to Settings > Packing Slip, and from there, you can customize it to your needs.

A packing slip is a great way to market your service, encourage your buyers to share- or leave a review of your product. Here is a great sample message you can use. Feel free to copy+paste it :)

Thank you so much for purchasing from [YOUR SHOP NAME]. You are supporting a dream. If you love our product, it goes a long way to take 30 seconds and leave a review on [SHOP PLATFORM]. Also, don't forget to share it with your friends by posting a picture on Instagram and tag me [IG]

[YOUR NAME]

This is an excellent example of a packing slip because:

  • You are thanking your customer

  • You are asking to leave a review

  • You encourage your buyers to share

You could also choose to enter a coupon code to convert your buyers into returning buyers. Know that the packing slip message unfortunately has a limit of 300 characters

This is how you can use Printful to ship your digital prints on physical products. Since you only have to upload the image, you can actually see this as a passive income stream; You upload the picture once, and when you get a sale, Printful does all the work for you.
